Reliable Connection & Safe Progress

Network issues and data security can ruin the cozy experience. This guide helps you diagnose and fix common connectivity problems, and explains how Palia’s cloud save system works so you never lose your hard‑earned progress – whether you play on PC or Switch.

🌐 Network Stability Improvements

For all platforms:

  • Use a wired Ethernet connection instead of Wi‑Fi whenever possible – reduces ping spikes and packet loss.
  • Restart your router/modem – clears cached routes and refreshes your IP.
  • Close bandwidth‑heavy applications – streaming (Netflix, YouTube), large downloads, or cloud backups.
  • Disable VPN or proxy – they add latency and can cause disconnects.
  • Change DNS to a faster resolver – e.g., Cloudflare (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1) or Google (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4). Instructions below.

PC specific:

  • Port forwarding (advanced): Forward UDP ports 27000-27030 to your PC’s local IP. This helps with strict NAT types.
  • Update network drivers – especially for Ethernet/Wi‑Fi adapters.
  • Disable IPv6 (temporarily) in network adapter settings – some users report improvements.

Switch specific:

  • Use a LAN adapter (official or compatible) for docked mode – the Switch’s Wi‑Fi chip is weak.
  • Change MTU settings – Go to System Settings → Internet → Your Network → Change Settings → MTU to 1500 (instead of 1400). This can reduce fragmentation.
  • Set a static IP on your router for the Switch to improve NAT.

📡 How to Change DNS (Step by Step)

Windows 10/11

  1. Open Control Panel → Network and Sharing Center.
  2. Click your active connection → Properties.
  3. Select “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” → Properties.
  4. Select “Use the following DNS server addresses”.
  5. Preferred: 1.1.1.1; Alternate: 1.0.0.1 (Cloudflare) or 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 (Google).
  6. OK → Close → restart the game.

Nintendo Switch

  1. System Settings → Internet → Internet Settings.
  2. Select your Wi‑Fi network → Change Settings.
  3. DNS Settings → Manual.
  4. Primary DNS: 1.1.1.1; Secondary DNS: 1.0.0.1.
  5. Save → test connection.

After changing DNS, you may need to restart the game and launcher for changes to take effect.

🔌 Port Forwarding (PC – Advanced)

If you frequently disconnect or cannot connect to other players, forwarding the following ports may help. This requires access to your router’s admin panel.

Refer to your router manufacturer’s guide for exact steps (usually found at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1).

💡 Port forwarding is usually not required, but can fix strict NAT issues. If unsure, skip this step.

☁️ Cloud Saves & Cross‑Progression

⚠️ On Nintendo Switch, save data is also automatically uploaded to Nintendo’s cloud if you have a Switch Online subscription. But Palia’s own cloud is the primary source – you do not need to rely on Nintendo’s backup.

💾 How to Backup Configuration Files (PC)

Your settings (graphics, keybinds, audio) are not cloud‑synced. To save them manually:

  1. Press Win + R, type %LOCALAPPDATA%\Palia\Saved\Config\WindowsClient\, press Enter.
  2. Copy the entire folder to a safe location (e.g., Desktop, OneDrive).
  3. To restore later, replace the folder with your backup.

This does not affect your game progress – only your preferences.
